Sugar Grams to Cups: Granulated, Brown, Powdered, & Syrups

Everything you need to know about converting white sugar, packed brown sugar, confectioners sugar, and liquid sweeteners between grams and cups.

Why Packing Matters for Sugar

Unlike flour, which traps excess air, different sugars have distinct physical structures ranging from free-flowing crystals to sticky molasses-coated grains and micro-fine powders.

Why Brown Sugar Weighs More

Brown sugar is coated with a thin film of molasses syrup. This coating makes the sugar crystals stick together. Unless packed firmly into the measuring cup, large irregular air voids remain between crystals. Pressing brown sugar into the cup eliminates these gaps, ensuring repeatable 220g per cup results.
